Black Mountain College was a liberal arts college formed in 1933 in North Carolina. Its approach was experimental and focused on holistic development. Studies were interdisciplinary, creation was prioritized, and students had control over most decisions (including deciding when they were ready to graduate). While no longer open, it’s legacy lives on, lease of which by its iconic alumni — Cy Twombly, John Cage, Ruth Asawa to name a few.

Rooted in the freedom schools established by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during Freedom Summer in 1964, Chicago Freedom School supports young people to take action for justice in their own lives and communities.

Kanuikapono Public Charter School provides a Hawaiian cultural-based educational opportunity to students. Grounded in Hawaiian culture, educational rigor, with an emphasis on technology, students gain an understanding of how to balance traditional practices with the 21st Century. During our time together, they will share how they’ve built instructional approaches that encourage young people to honor and explore cultural heritage.
